“Eating Faeries” 15

Officer Jensen grunted as he kicked the door down.  He and his fellow cops hopped through the door, guns ready and pointed.  All the reports had claimed the Ybarra girl was dangerous.  Calls to her mother had been unsuccessful.  Jensen crept forward.

He jumped as a cat hissed at him.  He sighed and continued moving forward.  He walked past a couch and a living room.  The television in this room was on.  Jensen could see the aerial view of this house.  To his left he saw the entry to the kitchen and he noticed a jar or two were set out.  Someone had just made a sandwich, Jensen thought, not less than ten minutes ago.  He hurried through the kitchen, hoping to spot the girl.  No such luck.

The other officers spread out through the house as well.  Within ten minutes each reported no signs of the Ybarra girl.  It appeared as no one was in the house except for the police.

“Bring in forensics,” Jensen shouted, “She ain’t here.  She must’ve heard about it on the news.” Jensen shook his head.  This Ybarra girl might’ve decided to run.  He sighed.  Why did they always try to run?

Alex felt her lungs breath nervously while she sat in the secret space.  She shook a little in her large clothes.  She felt cold as she sat there, hoping that no one could find her.  Alex closed her eyes, despite the dark and began to concentrate on positive thoughts, good thoughts. The book wouldn’t open for her.  She had shrunk to the size of a kindergartener and she was hiding in the secret compartment behind her closet.

“Well if this isn’t just the greatest day of my life,” Alex muttered sarcastically.  A tiny squealing sound started coming from near her.  She nervously was feeling around for the sound.  Her hands went over one of the jars.

The Faeries.

“Damn it,” Alex cursed.  She grabbed the jar with the squealing sound.  The lid was hard to open in the dark with her small hands, but she managed to get it off.  Alex reached into the jar until she had got hold of the little faerie.  She then squeezed it tight until it stopped squealing, and the tiny faeries was instead crying and begging for mercy.

“Shut up or else I’ll kill you all before they get to me!” Alex sneered under breath.  She was ready to bite and tear this little creature apart if it wouldn’t stop.

Despite their being cruel and evil creatures, the faeries fear of death outweighed their wish to get vengeance on Alex.  They all quieted down.  Alex let out a sigh of relief.  She tried to slow her breathing and hoped that the police would be gone soon.

Evermore turned on the radio in his rental car as he sat in the traffic jam on some odd street he had never heard of before.  He listened and grimaced as he heard the updates on the apprehension of the ‘wolf’s’ accomplice.

“Damn it.”  Evermore’s instincts told him, no he knew, he had to get to this girl before the police did.  Evermore wasn’t stupid.  He could smell bribery from a mile away.

He looked into the traffic jam and made an estimated risk.  Grabbing the mask and the black helmet, he left the rental there, deciding that the vehicle wasn’t worth the trouble.

“My employer can worry about the car,” He said as he bolted down the street in downtown Phoenix.  He followed what signs he could.  Evermore knew the house he had seen on the television was north of his current position.  He look up the sky and started to run that way.

After ten minutes in the dark, Alex’s eyes adjusted a tiny bit, but she still barely could see.  She thought to activate the Gem of Ages like she had done in the park, but she realized that having a whip that controlled the wind right now was a bad idea.  She grabbed the book and opened it, no easy task now it was roughly half her size.

When Alex opened it, it gave off a tiny glow.  It wasn’t much, but it was enough for her to see her hands and the faeries in the jars.  She was bored and needed something to do. So Alex harvested blood from the faeries.

Or rather, she collected it from the faeries the best she could in the dim light.  The faeries had been bleeding themselves and had healed rather fast, like Lisha had in the park.  Alex was starting to get an idea of the capabilities of the faeries.

She gently poured blood from jar after jar.  She used the lids of the jars to keep the faeries in.  Only one managed to escape its jar, but the Wolfdog, despite its new tiny stature, swiftly caught it in its mouth, holding it for Alex.  This made Alex smile with appreciation as she put the faerie back in her jar.  The wolfdog was proving itself to be a little helpful.

After she had refueled her supply of faerie’s blood, Alex removed her oversized clothes.  Still trying to keep quiet, she climbed out of them and put them into a pile for her to lie down in.  The wolfdog joined her and in the light of the book, Alex relaxed once more.  Like the day before when she had shrunk, Alex felt a bit more powerful than usual.  She didn’t know what it was, but she felt something in her was more powerful than normal.  Alex hoped that shrinking didn’t make her cocky and over courageous.

Patience will win out,
she thought.   Eventually the police would have to leave right?

Isha walked into the scene, in her pink skirt and revealing tank top.  She carelessly walked past the police tape and simply waved her arms as she walked.  One detective recognized her and waved the policemen away from her.

“Let her by,” Said the female detective to two of the cops.  The detective walked up to Isha.  She held out her palm to accept a handshake.

Isha looked down at the detective’s palm.  On the palm was the tattoo of a fang.  Ah.  The Mark of the Acolyte, Isha thought.

“Where is she?” Isha asked.

The detective retracted her hand and bowed her head low.  “She isn’t here.  The prince didn’t say you’d be here-”

“Of course he didn’t,” Isha interrupted, “I would never tell the prince what it is I want.  Now.  Let me into the house.”

Alex felt something make her skin crawl.  It was a feeling she had felt only a few times in her life.  The last time had been when she was meeting that man in the alley days ago.  When she first had seen the faeries…

Part of her mind felt tapped.  Well, more like it had been awakened.  It told her to kill it.  But her higher cognitive functions stopped it.  But this hidden part of her mind was right… or at least it felt like it was right.

Alex, although nude, stood up in the secret compartment.  She felt around the compartment.  She decided that it would be better to find a way to run rather than bother with the police.  She looked up and smiled.  Now she had a plan.

The Wolfdog nodded in agreement.

Officer Jensen was standing in the kitchen talking with the forensic team.  He was in mid-sentence, explaining what he had seen when saw a blond woman in a pink skirt and tank top enter the through the door to the kitchen.

Within the next ten seconds three things he became aware of three things: the tiny dog and sheetrock hit him in the head, this new woman screamed at him to shoot at the ceiling, and he saw the body of a tiny, nude girl running through the hole in the ceiling.

Suffice to say, Jensen’s skull felt like he had stuck his finger in an electricity socket.  His nose crunched with a loud sound as he hit the ground hard.

Alex ran through the attic, nude.  Her arms held tight to the book and the Gem of Ages as she ran.  She jumped from board to board, heading toward one of the open holes in roof.  This was fun, but it also was dangerous too.

The wolfdog had followed her lead and it was distracting the police.  She hoped that no one else would notice her.  She had climbed into the attic from the secret space, as the space behind her closet had no ceiling was directly linked to the attic.

Alex stood at the air vent that led to the roof.  It was metal and the opening through it was small.  Normally it would be too small for her to crawl through, but her new tiny height allowed her to squeeze through.  She double-checked her possessions: the Gem of Ages, the book and the vial of Faerie’s blood she had just collected.

Alex then squeezed through the air vent with the three possessions.  Soon she stood on the roof.  The sun was setting.  She lost her balance and started to lose hold of her possessions.  Alex managed to hold on to the vial, but the book and gem slipped to the edge of the roof.

She rushed out to grab them.  When she reached the edge, she was glad to see that no one was on this side of the house.  She grabbed the book and gem.

It was then that Alex considered whether or not to just jump and end it all.  She looked around for something to help her climb down as the sun dimmed and the moon rose.
